From Books to a Submitted First Return

The Federal Tax Authority's Corporate Tax return guidance places the work in a clear order: confirm the Tax Period, prepare the accounting and tax information, enter the return in EmaraTax, review the declarations, submit and arrange payment. The portal does not replace the computation. Keep a copy of the submitted return and the working papers that support each material entry.

The answer

The clean route starts before EmaraTax

The clean filing route starts before EmaraTax. The Taxable Person confirms its first Tax Period, closes the books, prepares the tax computation, checks declarations and only then enters the return. The FTA's filing guidance treats the portal as the submission channel, not the place where missing accounting decisions are made. If the first screen is your first review, the order is already wrong.

For most Taxable Persons, the FTA says the return and Corporate Tax payment are due within nine months from the end of the Tax Period. Its compliance notice gives the concrete example of a Tax Period ending on 31 December 2025, with filing and payment due on or before 30 September 2026. Confirm the actual date in the FTA account.

After reading this page, you should be able to set the work order, assign the records and perform a pre-submit tie-out. We recommend putting a named reviewer between the prepared computation and the submit action because the person entering the form can miss an error that a second person sees in minutes.

Before login

Control the period before touching the fields

Stage one is period control. Confirm the legal person, Tax Registration Number, accounting basis, financial year end and first Tax Period. Compare the date with the registration record and any FTA correspondence. If the entity has a branch, Tax Group or free-zone position, capture that before the return is started. A wrong period sends every later figure to the wrong place.

Stage two is the evidence close. Freeze the trial balance, general ledger, financial statements, bank reconciliation and material schedules. Trace unusual entries to invoices, contracts, approvals and payment evidence. Write the tax adjustments as a bridge, including relief, losses, elections and related-party treatment. Do not let an incomplete ledger become a completed return simply because the portal accepts the fields.

Stage three is ownership. One person supplies records, one person prepares the computation and one person reviews the final inputs where the business can manage it. If one owner must do all three, use a written checklist and keep the unresolved list visible. The FTA requires complete and accurate information. Responsibility cannot be outsourced to a password.

At the portal

Enter from the working paper, then read the declaration

At the portal, enter from the working paper, not from memory. Confirm the Tax Period, registration details, accounting information, Taxable Income, adjustments, relief or election position, losses, tax credits and Corporate Tax Payable. Save the draft or working copy as the system allows, then compare each material field with the signed-off computation.

Review the declaration as a legal statement about the return. Check that the revenue, expenses, related-party entries and tax adjustments agree with the records. For a QFZP, review the free-zone schedules, qualifying Revenue, substance information and other income separately. For a business claiming relief, confirm the election and the records supporting eligibility.

Submission is not payment. Arrange payment through the approved route after confirming the amount and due date, then save the submitted return, confirmation, payment evidence and final computation in the Tax Period file. The FTA registration service says EmaraTax is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but availability does not extend a statutory due date.

Cost and proof

A second check catches the expensive errors

Run one arithmetic check before sending. Illustration: Taxable Income is AED 500,000. The first AED 375,000 is taxed at 0%, leaving AED 125,000 above the threshold. AED 375,000 x 0% = AED 0 and AED 125,000 x 9% = AED 11,250. The expected Corporate Tax is AED 11,250 before tax credits or other adjustments. Compare that result with the portal calculation.

The most common failure is a mismatch between the accounts and the return. Revenue is entered gross in one place and net in another, a director payment is left in expenses without support, or a free-zone stream is marked qualifying because its invoice says Dubai. The reviewer should test the source record, tax treatment and calculation, not only whether the portal shows a green status.

Cost matters when the submission is late or wrong. Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025 took effect on 14 April 2026. It sets AED 1,000 for a first late return and AED 2,000 for repetition within 24 months. Late payment is a monthly charge calculated at 14% per annum on unsettled tax from the day after the payment due date. Do not use an old penalty checklist.

After submission

Leave a file that can be reopened next year

After submission, create a file another person can reopen. Save the final return and confirmation, payment evidence, computation, adjustment schedule, source index and unresolved issues, then record who approved the return and when. The FTA's records guidance treats the support as part of the compliance file, so store it in the controlled Tax Period folder. If the owner cannot explain how a material number moved from ledger to tax computation, the process ended too early.

Exiloz can prepare the review pack, guide the field-by-field check and list items that must be resolved before submission. That is commercial filing support, not registered Tax Agent status. The taxpayer or an authorised person remains responsible for the official filing route. If a statutory audit or independent report is required, appoint the separate professional required by the applicable rule. Keep the indexed working papers available, rather than leaving the receipt as the only copy.

The unresolved point is usually not the portal mechanics. It is how a mixed or unusual transaction should be treated when the public guidance does not answer the exact facts. Mark that item as unresolved, obtain the relevant contract and advice, and decide whether to correct the computation before filing. A clean receipt does not make an unresolved tax treatment safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

For checking the first-return workflow.

What comes before EmaraTax?

Confirm the entity's Tax Period and collect the records needed for the computation. The Federal Tax Authority says taxpayers should prepare commercial licence information, financial records and business activity details before filing. Reconcile the books and document tax adjustments before entering figures in the portal.

Who can submit a Corporate Tax return?

Taxpayers can file their Corporate Tax Returns directly through EmaraTax. The Federal Tax Authority also says they may seek assistance from authorised Tax Agents listed on its website. A commercial consultant can support preparation and review, but do not present that support as Tax Agent status unless the person is authorised.

What should be checked before submission?

The return should agree with the accounting records, tax computation, supporting schedules and the entity's declarations. The FTA's Corporate Tax return guidance stresses complete and accurate information. Review the Tax Period, adjustments, relief or election position and payment details before submission, then save the final return and confirmation for the file.

Can Exiloz help with the filing steps?

Yes. Exiloz can prepare the return review pack, walk through the EmaraTax inputs and flag unresolved items before submission. It provides commercial filing support and tax review. The Federal Tax Authority's EmaraTax service remains the official channel for submitting the return and paying any amount due.
