Payroll and WPS Services in Dubai — questions we get asked
What is WPS and who has to use it?
The Wage Protection System is the electronic salary transfer regime supervised by MOHRE. Mainland employers with MOHRE-registered staff must pay through it. Free zones run their own equivalents, and several now mirror WPS closely.
What happens if we file WPS late?
MOHRE can suspend new work permits, and repeated non-payment escalates to fines and to restrictions on the establishment. The practical damage usually lands first as a blocked visa you needed.
How is end-of-service gratuity calculated?
On basic salary, not the total package. 21 days of basic pay for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after, under the UAE Labour Law, pro-rated for part years. The mistake we see most is accruing on gross.
Do we have to pay GPSSA?
For UAE nationals, yes, and for other GCC nationals under the reciprocal scheme. The employer and employee shares differ and the contribution base is not the same as the WPS salary figure.
What does payroll outsourcing cost?
We price per employee per month, with the WPS file included, and there is usually a small minimum for very small teams. The number is confirmed in writing before the first run.
Can you run payroll for a free zone company?
Yes. We follow whichever wage protection rules your zone applies, and we will tell you if the zone has changed them recently.
