Every business filing UAE VAT or other tax returns finds errors, and since 1 April 2026 rules sort them precisely. An error of AED 10,000 or less goes into the next return not yet due. A larger one needs a voluntary disclosure to the FTA within 20 business days. Voluntary disclosure preparation matters most once that 20-day clock runs.
This guide is about UAE tax returns that were already filed. A period never filed at all is a late return, which is a different problem with a different fix. The sections below cover the amended rule, the cost of each route and what counts as discovery. They also cover refund errors and how the same rule works for Corporate Tax.
When the tax difference is AED 10,000 or less and a return is still to fall due. Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2026 amended Article 10 of the Tax Procedures Executive Regulation from 1 April 2026. The correction goes in that return.
If the return for the period in which the error was found is due earlier, the correction goes there instead. No voluntary disclosure is needed on this route, and no disclosure penalty arises. The rule applies across the federal taxes the FTA administers, including VAT and Corporate Tax.
UAE tax errors of AED 10,000 or less go in the next return not yet due, under Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2026. No separate voluntary disclosure penalty then applies.
When the tax difference exceeds AED 10,000. A disclosure is also needed for a smaller error when no return is left to file. In both cases, the deadline is 20 business days from discovering the error.
The clock runs from discovery, not from the end of the quarter or the next board meeting. Twenty business days is roughly four calendar weeks, and less around public holidays, because weekends and official holidays are excluded. Count the days on a calendar the day the error is found and fix the disclosure date.
A UAE voluntary disclosure is required within 20 business days when a tax error exceeds AED 10,000. Smaller errors also need one when no future return remains to be filed.
Correcting an eligible error in the next return avoids the disclosure penalty entirely. A voluntary disclosure costs 1% of the tax difference monthly from the day after the original due date. Where the FTA has already notified an audit, a fixed 15% also applies.
Take an illustrative AED 46,000 input tax error in a return due 28 April 2026, found 10 November 2026. Disclosed in late November, about seven months count, so the penalty is AED 3,220. After an audit notification, AED 6,900 more would apply, roughly tripling the cost.
Voluntary disclosures in the UAE cost 1% of the tax difference monthly from the original return's due date. Waiting for an FTA audit notification adds a fixed 15% on top.
The point when the business knows, or should reasonably know, that a return was wrong. An accountant's email flagging the problem usually starts the clock. A vague suspicion does not, but the working papers should show when it became a finding.
Do not split one error into several small ones to stay under AED 10,000, because the FTA can add the pieces back together. If one cause produced AED 30,000 of tax across three returns, treat it as one disclosure. Date every finding and keep the evidence in one file.
UAE tax errors are discovered when the business knows, or should reasonably know, of them. Treat all amounts from one cause as a single error, not as several smaller ones.
Yes, Article 10 also covers refunds that were claimed or received for too much. An inflated excess carried into a refund request follows the same AED 10,000 test. Refund-side errors are easy to miss because no tax payment was ever short.
Corporate Tax returns are annual, so the next return still to fall due may be many months away. That makes the disclosure route more common for Corporate Tax errors above the AED 10,000 line. Our guide to what voluntary disclosure assistance costs covers the preparation work involved in detail.
The UAE AED 10,000 correction rule covers overstated refunds and applies to Corporate Tax as well as VAT. Annual Corporate Tax returns therefore make disclosures more common for larger errors.
Exiloz sizes the error, confirms whether it belongs in the next return or needs a disclosure, and prepares the filing inside 20 business days. Ask about voluntary disclosure preparation.
Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2026 amended Article 10 of the Tax Procedures Executive Regulation from 1 April 2026. It applies to tax errors discovered on or after that date.
A voluntary disclosure is then required within 20 business days, even for an error of AED 10,000 or less. This often happens after deregistration or on a final tax return.
Yes, the fixed 15% penalty applies only where the FTA has already notified an audit. Disclosing before any audit letter arrives keeps the penalty to the monthly 1% charge alone.
The disclosed tax is treated as due 20 business days after submission. If it is not paid by then, the 14% annual late-payment penalty starts running on the unpaid balance.
No, the test looks at the tax difference arising from the error, and the FTA can combine amounts from the same cause. Splitting an error risks a larger penalty later.
UAE business days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and official public holidays announced each year. Twenty business days is therefore about four calendar weeks, and shorter around Eid and other holiday periods.
Keep the discovery date, the cause, the returns affected, the tax difference in each and the route chosen. Attach the invoices and the calculation working that produced every figure used.
Yes, Article 10 applies across the federal taxes administered by the FTA, which also include excise tax. The same AED 10,000 test decides between the next return and a disclosure.
No, a late return covers a tax period that was never filed at all. A voluntary disclosure corrects a return that was filed on time but contained a material error.
Yes, Exiloz calculates the tax difference, drafts the explanation letter and prepares the EmaraTax submission. For smaller errors, it adjusts the next return instead and records the full correction trail.
Since 1 April 2026, UAE tax errors of AED 10,000 or less go in the next return not yet due. Larger errors, or any error with no return left, need a voluntary disclosure within 20 business days. Disclosures cost 1% a month, plus a fixed 15% after an audit notice. Never split one error just to get under the line.
The 2026 rule gives every error in a filed UAE tax return a clear route. Small errors go straight into the next return, while larger ones need a voluntary disclosure within 20 business days. The cost then depends mostly on timing, especially whether an FTA audit notice has already arrived. Refund errors and Corporate Tax errors follow exactly the same test.
Record the discovery date and cause in writing as soon as an error is found. Work out the full tax difference from that one cause across every affected tax return. Choose the route, set the deadline and fix the underlying cause in the accounting system. Exiloz can prepare the disclosure or the correction within the 20 business days allowed.
